Inter-generational Dialogue in Celebration of International Women’s Day

WIPSEN-Africa organised an intergenerational dialogue on 8th March, 2012 to celebrate International Women's Day under the theme "Taking a Step". The objective of the dialogue was to bridge the gap between young girls and women rights activists, and inspire young girls to claim their rights and become responsible citizens. The event was attended by 65 young girls from 13 different schools in Accra, Volta, Ashanti and Central regions and 5 women leaders from different professional backgrounds. The young girls were divided into groups and each group was given a case scenario involving specific social issue which they had to analyze and propose concrete steps to solve the problem. This aspect of the project was aimed at preparing the young girls for their group assignment under the theme "My Step 2012."  "My Step Project 2012" is a year-long service learning project, chosen by participants of the March 8th, 2012 celebration, that analyses and addresses societal issues in the girls own communities. WIPSEN-Africa will follow-up on the young girls' progress in selecting and addressing a social issue in their community 6 months after the March 8th, 2012 event. In 2013, the group of girls who have taken action and shown measurable outcomes in addressing their selected social issue will be awarded with a prize of $500 and will make a presentation at WIPSEN-Africa's event on March 8th, 2013 on the International Women's Day.

The March 8 dialogue received wide media coverage. It was broadcasted on Ghana TV3, METRO TV, GTV and Peace FM and Joy FM radio stations
